Rajnikanth's 'Robot' set to take over the world

India's biggest film production ever, Robot, starring Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, will roll out in around 30 countries this weekend (October 1), at the same time as its highly anticipated Indian release.
The film is India's most expensive ever with a budget of $33m (Rs1.50bn). However, it wasn't produced by the Hindi-speaking Bollywood film industry, but by the Tamil-language film industry based in Chennai.
In order to reach the widest audience possible, the film was made in three languages - Tamil, Hindi and Telegu.
London-based B4U Pictures is handling the release of the Hindi version outside of India, and has booked the film into some 25-30 countries with around 200 prints. In addition to the US and UK, the film will also open in South Africa, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea.
Rajnikanth, the mustachioed hero of the film who is a huge star southern India, also has a following in Japan. However, it's difficult to secure cinema slots in the competitive Japanese market, and the film will open there in two or three weeks.
Hindi is the most widely spoken language among the Indian diaspora, although the Tamil and Telegu versions will also be released in some countries.
Robot is directed by S. Shankar, who also made Rajnikanth's 2007 smash hit Sivaji: The Boss. It tells the story of an android called Chiti, whose purpose is to protect humanity, but who runs into difficulties when he begins to experience human emotions.
The director told Indian press that he made the film to be appreciated by an international audience: "The script is more like an international film. Anyone from anywhere can understand, identify and enjoy the movie," Shankar said. "People in villages will also be able to understand it easily...it's perfect for the Indian audience."
Around 40% of the film's budget was spent on special effects. Stan Winston Studio, which worked on Jurassic Park and Avatar, provided the animatronics technology. Hong Kong action director Yuen Woo Ping, who worked on Kill Bill and The Matrix films, was stunt coordinator for the film.
Judging by the advance buzz, Robot is expected to be a huge hit but will go head-to-head with a big Bollywood film, Anjaana Anjaani, which had its release postponed from September 24 to October 1. In southern India there is no contest - Rajnikanth is worshipped like a god in the southern states - but the competition will be tougher in northern India and overseas.

India's highest-grossing film ever - 3 Idiots, starring Aamir Khan  - was released at the end of last year and raked in $72m in India and $16m overseas. While Rajnikanth is not as well known outside India as stars such Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, Robot has created significant publicity internationally due to the size of its budget, its exotic shooting schedule in India, the US and Machu Picchu, and its elaborate special effects.

     Next
There's many reasons to watch Endhiran/Robot but none as compelling as the bilingual's leading man, Rajnikanth, who creates hysteria wherever he goes. And rightly so.
The man may be unassuming in real life. But when he dons the greasepaint, he becomes a chameleon. Nothing is impossible for the Tamil superstar as he transforms into a fighting machine half his age.
And while he's at it, he sports some outlandish outfits. We decided to present some of those right here. Click through the slide show, and vote for the most outrageous look at the end.
Rajni in gold
Makeup can do wonders like giving the 60-year-old star a full head of hair and an unlined face. Then there's the military style metallic gold jacket and flares to go with the whole 'Robot' look.

Enthiran' to do Rs.600 Crores business!!

A hype that was ever seen in entire Indian Film Industry is Super Star Rajinikanth’s ‘Robot/Enthiran.’ Made on a magnumopus budget of Rs.180 Crores by Director Shankar and Producer Kalanithi Maran; movie is set to release on October 1st all over the world.

The Highlights of this movie are enough to make it a Block Buster as the hard work that is put in by a team of thousands of members for over two years has resulted in a mind blowing cinema which will fill your eyes with flow of surprises, a report says. If South Indian movie rights for Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala are known to have fetched more than Rs.60 Crores while satellite rights will recover them at least Rs.10 Crores, a figure ever heard off.
With the scale of release that is beating the likes of Hollywood movies; nearly 2,400 screens world wide on the first day is unique achievement of an Indian Cinema and that goes to the only name of Rajinikanth. Other than these, we do have special attractions like first time shooting in Machu Picchu in Peru, first time usage of Animatronics, final climax graphics working out to Rs. 60 Crores and many more.

Finally, optimistic analysts are coming out with Rs. 600 Crores as the business figure that ‘robot’ is capable of reaching. Let us wait till October 1st, to know the real worth of ‘Rajini’ and ‘Robot.

Explaining the Superstar phenomenon!

Traveling on the city roads can be a mundane affair, almost boring you to death. The only respite offered is by the colorful movie posters that are pasted all over the city walls. It was during one such mundane ride along one of the busy city roads that I saw this poster from which this thought sprang. Stopping at a traffic signal, it was clear that all heads had turned in the same direction and were savoring that poster. It carried a still from Endhiran, the name of a local theater, the message ‘Viraivil’ (coming soon) and in a very bold and bright font – ‘Trailer ippodhu Thirayidapadugiradhu’ (Trailer being screened now). This is definitely something new and unheard of. We have seen all kinds of poster advertising films running in theaters. But, this is undoubtedly the first time that a theater has printed and pasted posters to tell people that a trailer was being screened.
What a waste of resources, many would think! But, think twice because what the theater owner has done here makes perfect business sense. If you want to get a better idea of what this is all about, better get a ticket for a movie in a theater which is screening the Endhiran trailer – you will be able to see the effect for yourself. Over the last fortnight or so, the Endhiran mania has reached fever pitch. Such excitement and euphoria over the trailer release of a movie has never been seen before. Of course, part of that can be attributed to the power and reach of the Sun Network, but the rest is pure Rajini charisma.

Sample this for the amount of excitement Endhiran has generated. Going by the crowd’s reaction in theaters, most of them have bought tickets and entered cinema halls just to watch the trailer, not the main movie being shown (no disrespect to any movie currently in theaters, but this is a fact). There have been ‘once more’ requests from the audience when the trailer has been screened. All kinds of SMSs asking for FDFS tickets for the movie have been circulating on mobile networks. And, a newly opened multiplex in Chennai is now running a Rajinikanth film festival, screening seven of his biggest hits and offering FDFS tickets to those who watch all the seven movies – smart marketing tactic; works only for Rajini movies.

There are some people who still don’t understand what all the fuss is about and why everyone is going nuts over a Rajinikanth film. Some North Indian friends say, ‘he is just an actor, he is not very handsome, nor does he have a great physique, there are many stars who are better dancers etc……. he defies all the definitions of a film star, then why do you call him Superstar?’ The answer is as simple as it is complex. The harder you try to explain the Rajinikanth phenomenon, the more inexplicable it becomes. It is not something that can be counted or measured in terms of awards or hits or crores earned at the box office. The Rajinikanth phenomenon is something that transcends the medium (cinema) itself. He is an excellent actor, a sincere and earnest performer, but to his fans this is not what matters most, it is the man he is and what he remains to be, in spite of his unimaginable success.

For more than 20 years, Rajinikanth has ceased to be just the character on screen. In almost all the films since 1990, there have always been references to his persona, his political possibilities, his previous films, his famous mannerisms etc. Remember the ‘Khushboo-Rajini’ song from Annamalai, the ‘Style’ songs from Basha and Sivaji, the ‘Pokkiri Raja’ song from Kuselan or even the songs from Endhiran (Irumbile oru Idhayam which has the line ‘Superstar come get this’ or the Boom Boom song which goes ‘Autokkara’). There is no other film star in India, not even Shahenshah Amitabh Bachchan, whose personality has superseded the character being played on screen. Any Rajini film is incomplete without the customary dialogue or two being said about his style, simplicity or political clout – and incidentally that is the part that his fans enjoy the most. Think of it; almost all his movies over the last decade or two have had moments where the Rajinikanth personality has taken precedence over the character. There seem to be a few moments even in Endhiran like when Aishwarya asks Rajini to go his own way ‘Thani Vazhi’. In an orthodox cinema outlook, it would not be the right thing for an actor to outgrow the character; but curiously that is what works most marvelously for Rajinikanth all the time.

Another thing about the Rajinikanth phenomenon is its omnipresence. There is no corner of Tamil Nadu, no class of audience that is immune to the Rajini effect. Even self-professed cinema connoisseurs, who scoff at ‘petty’ commercial ways of regional cinema, succumb to the Rajini magic. It is almost impossible to not be a Rajini fan in Tamil Nadu because it is scary to be part of a miniscule majority who are not ready to accept an overwhelming fact.

With respect to all other stars, there are two sets of viewers - first come the fans that adore the actor and like everything that he/she does. The second set is the non-fans who are not very concerned about the star in question and choose to evaluate the movie impartially. But, these rules don’t apply for Rajini- he has two classes of viewers; the fans and the fanatics. Every fanatic is a fan but every fan is not a fanatic; but everyone is definitely a fan. That is why Rajini films always break even (a clear understatement) at the box office unless overambitious producers and distributors overestimate a film’s potential, making a hash of the business (as was seen in Kuselan).

Clearly, the Rajini phenomenon is not the usual star-fan adulation thing. It is something unique that can be felt only by those who have grown up under the full glow of the Rajinikanh charisma. For others, it will always be difficult to understand and explain. Perhaps, it is best summed up in the way my friend, a die hard Rajini fan, chose to put it – mimicking a dialogue from Pammal K Sambandham, - ‘Rajini padam anubhavikkanum, aaraya koodathu’. Let’s wait for another electrifying Superstar experience. To put in the words of the Endhiran trailer – ‘Get ready folks’.

Enthiran Madurai Rights Sold out for Rs 13Cr…

All over the cinema industry was keenly watching, Super Star Rajini’s Enthiran Trading.
As per the current information, Enthiran film will trade more than 300 Crores. As reported on an famous Bollywood website, Enthiran ( The Robo ) in hindi will break several records, so far 1000 have confirmed the release of enthiran. Robo release in Hindi has been acquired by Venus.
Sun Pictures have not declared any name of releaser in chennai, but Rs.13 crores haven been collected for Madurai Rights ( A Report ). Seems brother of Madurai Anbu , Mr.Alagar have got the rights for Madurai. Think what will be the rate offered for chennai market if madurai market has been sold for thirteen crores.
Once the entire rights have been sold old. It would be a biggest record on Indian Cinema Industry. As already informed HBO will be the distributor for International cinema audience around the globe. Consider the trading involved in Enthiran , Rajni’s Block Buster in Indian Cinema.

The costliest Indian film

With S. Shankar, big seems to get only bigger with every new film. The Chennai-based filmmaker, notorious for overshooting his films’ assigned budgets, is set to deliver what Aishwarya Rai Bachchan calls “a landmark in the history of Indian cinema”, with his latest trilingual Endhiran (Robot). The film that took two years to make has cost a jaw-dropping Rs 150 crore—twice the budget of the costliest film to date, the Bollywood multi-starrer Blue (which, incidentally, sank like a stone at the box office). Forty per cent of the money is believed to have been spent on special effects alone. Rajnikanth’s make-up was worth the cost of a small film—Rs 3 crore—and the set (which, the publicity machine emphasises, is “eco-friendly”) was worth Rs 5 crore. Gossip has it that it was Shankar’s location scouting—the film has been shot in Vienna, Machu Picchu in Peru, US and Brazil, apart from Goa, Kulu-Manali, Pune, Vellore and Chennai—in the time of recession that led the first producer, Ayngaran International, to pull out soon after the movie went on floors, after which Kalanidhi Maran had to step in to back the project through Sun TV Network’s movie production arm. Last heard, Think Music had acquired the music rights of the Tamil version for a whopping Rs 7 crore, the highest ever for a South Indian film.
Travels in Hyperreality:
  • Costliest Indian film ever made, at Rs 150 crore
  • 40 per cent of the budget said to be spent on special effects alone
  • Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai paired romantically for the first time
  • Yuen Woo Ping, action choreographer in the Matrix and Kill Bill sequels, was Endhiran’s stunt coordinator
  • First Indian film for Mary E. Vogt, the costume designer for the Men in Black series
  • Stanwinston Studio, the maker of Jurassic Park, Predator, Terminator, Iron Man, Avatar, provided the animatronics technology
  • Film likely to be released late September in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi

There’s more than big money to attract the viewer to this futuristic sci-fi set in 2020. For one, there’s superstar Rajnikanth, playing a scientist who builds a robot that looks like him to save people from an evil force represented by Danny Denzongpa. (Shades of The Terminator? And the Hindi flop from last year, Love Story 2050?). What’s more, the film has Aishwarya playing Rajni’s love interest for the first time—a pairing that excites interest against a backdrop of swirling stories about how he unsuccessfully tried to make her the heroine of three of his earlier films—Baba, Chandramukhi and Shivaji—and finally hit a home run with Endhiran on her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan’s intervention. The two stars will be dancing to the tunes of Oscar winner A.R. Rahman and mouthing lyrics written by poet Vairamuthu. The music will be mixed by another Oscar winner, Resul Pookutty.
The international contributions to what Rajni labels Shankar’s “dream project” are just as eyebrow-raising. Yuen Woo Ping, who has directed Jackie Chan and was the action choreographer in the Matrix and Kill Bill sequels, is Endhiran’s stunt coordinator while Mary E.Vogt, the costume designer for the Men in Black series, will showcase her work for the first time in an Indian film. The film has made extensive use of Stanwinston Studio’s animatronics technology, putting it in the exalted company of Jurassic Park, Predator, Terminator, Iron Man and the recent Avatar, which used the same studio.
In the run-up to the film’s likely release in late September (September 24 is the rumoured date), the Tamil film industry is full of Endhiran buzz. (Even the latest Amul ad features it: Rai’bot, The Makhanical Wonder...”) Every little nugget of information has found its way into the media, including the story of how the film got its double-barrelled title: Shankar’s fondness for English names for his films—Gentleman, Indian, Jeans, Boys—was initially extended to Endhiran, too, which started out being called Robot (its title in both the Hindi and Telugu versions). But it was quickly changed when the Tamil Nadu government declared that its entertainment tax waiver would apply only to films with a Tamil title.
Apart from the title, the film boasts of other elements that might just fetch it a waiver. It is inspired by famous stories of the late novelist Sujatha, En Iniya Enthira (My Beloved Robot) and Jeano (A Robotic Dog). Rajni plays both human and robot. Shahrukh Khan had initially been approached for these twin roles but quit the project “because of creative differences”. Rajni himself confirmed this at the music release of the Hindi version of the film in Mumbai last weekend, with the comment, “Daane daane pe likha hai khaane waale ka naam” (i.e. he was destined to play this role).
At the music release of the Tamil version in Kuala Lumpur, however, he sounded a bit like a callow youth, when he said, “You’ll never be able to see a beauty like Aishwarya in our generation. She is a true artist.” But his effusive praise notwithstanding, the Mumbai star is said to be “seriously” unhappy with some of her costumes and her garish headgear, feathers and all.

So, will Endhiran make the cash registers ring? Will the audience in B and C centres be able to connect with a sci-fi? Film experts hold that “the Marans are too astute to back a film unless they know it’s a winner”. Writer Raji Monisha Cherian says, “There’s no reason why a film in which Shankar has blended all the formula elements should flop.” The word from art critic Sadanand Menon is: “Shankar is comfortable with romance, drama, stunts and the use of technology.” But he is quick to add, tongue in cheek, “I was thinking that all these days they (actors in Tamil cinema) were playacting as robots. With this film, they actually are robots. A truthful moment for Tamil cinema!”
But, ultimately it’s Thalaivar Rajnikanth’s word that matters. Rajni, said to have been non-committal after seeing his films i and  Baba (which later flopped at the box office), is believed to have told Shankar after seeing the rushes of Endhiran: “The film will do well.” Five more reassuring and loaded words were never spoken by a superstar to his director in the history of Indian cinema.
- An Article from outlook.com

How big will 'Endhiran' really be?

Endhiran or Robot is creating already so many ‘first times’ in the history of Indian cinema. Not only does this Shankar direction bring together Southern superstar Rajinikanth and Aishwarya, it is also the biggest budget (reportedly 150 crores) film to be made in India. It is also the first time that any Indian film has gone all the way to Machu Pichu in Peru to shoot a song and dance sequence. In fact, Rajini has already compared this sci-fi thriller to Sholay, one of the cult movies that Bollywood can boast of.

To make sure Endhiran clicks with the audience even before the film hits theatres, the filmmakers have ensured that the film comprises of all the winning combinations possible. They have Oscar winning AR Rahman and Resul Pookutty on board and the music of the film has been a hit in India as well as the South-East. Though the global recession affected the earlier producers of the film, Sun Pictures headed by Kalanithi Maran immediately took over the reigns. It now appears like it was a wisely calculated move. In fact, everything seems to have been working great for this movie, with Shah Rukh Khan even parting with the film’s titles Robot that he had first registered with the Red Chillies.

Interestingly, though Rajini has himself admitted that super stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Kamal Haasan were earlier considered for the role of the scientist who makes a clone of himself in Endhiran, he credited destiny to be the reason behind him being a part of this magnum opus. In fact, he has also credited the directorial prowess of Shankar for being the reason behind him signing on the dotted line. Endhiran, it has been speculated, is also set to turn the year around for Bollywood that has mostly seen big flops this year

In fact, it has been reported that Kalanithi Maran, grandnephew of Tamilnadu CM M Karunanidhi, is so resourceful through his film production unit that no one can match up to his publicity drive. Reportedly, most of the Tamil producers and distributors have turned reluctant to open their films in the two weeks leading up to Endhiran’s release. Working once again on Rajinikanth’s Shivaji formula – of going “big”, the film will be screened in 30 movie theatres in Chennai alone, and in almost 1,400 theatres all across Tamil Nadu.

The filmmakers have also gone all ahead in trying to make Endhiran a theatrical experience. The promos and film trailers have also been made to focus on the work by art director Sabu Cyril and action director Peter Hein adding to the razzle-dazzle. The stars also seem to be lucky for Endhiran with most of the publicity and news generated around it being quite positive, except on one occasion when a Delhi-based filmmaker accused the Endhiran camp of having stolen the film’s title Robot from him. While the matter has since hushed down, actor Aamir Khan has expressed his desire to watch this flick. The film has not only created hype in the heart of the film fraternity, but has roused the curiosity of the non-enthusiasts as well.

Enthiran gets 'U' Certification!!

The countdown has already started and the entire Nation is curiously awaiting the release of ‘Enthiran’. Last week theatre have printed Trailer Tickets for first time in  World Cinema. Everyone has celebrated the trailer release in Satyam, kasi & Rakhi Cinemas in Chennai. This kind of trailer release celebration has happened for the first time ever. Recently, the film was viewed by members of Censor Film Board Certification Committee and they have passed clean ‘U’ certificate for the film.

Director Shankar has added all such attention-grabbing factors that would gratify the interests of universal audiences. Well for the kids, it’s expected to be a bigger treat as the stunning visuals in teasers have indeed raised everyone’s expectations.

‘Enthiran’ was earlier scheduled for September 24 release and now it seems to be postponed towards Sep 30.

Endhiran’ on Oct. 1 – It’s official

The wait is over. It is officially announced today that the biggest Indian movie of the year ‘Endhiran’ will hit the theatres world wide on October 1. ‘Endhiran- The Robot’ is releasing in India, USA, UK, Europe, Malaysia, Singapore& Australia on October 1 in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi languages.
The magnum opus has been the talk of the town for many weeks and will remain for many weeks to come. The music of ‘Endhiran’ has already captured the imagination of the film buffs all over and it’s top position on iTunes came as a pinnacle.
The stars of 2010 are going to be Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai. The director of the year is going to be Shankar. The banner of the year is going to be Sun Pictures.
With over 2000 prints around the world and over 600 shows per day around Chennai theatres alone things can't get better than this.
Fasten your seat belts and get ready for the experience!!

Endhiran Music Review

Endhiran Soundtrack opens exactly with those sounds that we were expecting to hear in it. Quadrupled robotic voices, e-tones, booming bass, flanger and phaser effects welcome us into the musical universe of a Tamil Robot – The Endhiran. Rahman tunes the words ‘Pudhiya Manidhaa, Bhoomikku Vaa’ like a religious verse sung to God, but, here, it instead, is a Mantra to a Machine. By introducing the main synth bass motif right in the beginning, Rahman gives us a holder to hold on to, while he and Khathija Rahman leisurely sing the verses set to an unpredictable phrase pattern, so that we can follow the path without falling down and reach S.P.B safely.

Ah! S.P.B. The Diction. The Expression. The Singing. The voice. S.P.B beautifully sings to Endhiran, Vairamuthu’s poetic Pros and Cons of Man and Machine. This song clearly tells us that this is a film soundtrack and not another music album. Listening to music, especially with the way the string section beautifully progresses through the song, it is easy to visualize how this song is going to play behind the montage of Scientist Vaseegaran giving birth to Chitti, part by part.

When was the last time, Rahman, took a pause within a song, to wander and explore new musical terrains in the interludes, that is totally cut off from the main song and one that in itself could be a complete music piece? He does that in ‘Kaadhal Anukkal’ with two varied exotic interludes. I could imagine Shankar telling Rahman about the places where he is planning to shoot the song. The melody, though isn’t of everlasting type, is quite engaging. The melody really gets uplifted by the boozed and dozed-off style singing, of the melody, by Vijay Prakash and Shreya Ghosal.

Rahman, interestingly, differentiates the love duets between Vaseegaran and Sanaa from that of Chitti and Sanaa, by orchestrating the song ‘Kaadhal Anukkal’ with all acoustic instruments – live string section, guitars, accordion, harmonica and what not, to lend a human touch, whereas in ‘Irumbilae Oru Idhayam’, which is a Chitti and Sanaa duet, it is all techno, there is absolutely no real instruments anywhere in the song.

It is not just the orchestration and beats; even the melody is composed to the character. In ‘Arima Arima’, while Sadhana Sargam connects the notes in the melody through curves, Hariharan connects them with straight lines, much like a robotic motion. There are no extra emotions, note slides or additional wavering effects in Hariharan’s voice throughout the song.

While Robot in ‘Arima’ is arrogant and masculine, in which Chitti proclaims himself as a Lion, Chitti in ‘Irumbilae’ is a sweet lover boy, and accordingly the melody is submissive. In ‘Irumbilae’, Rahman sings in short phrases of melody much like the short sentences of a Robot's speech. Like how Chitti’s human emotions are caught in a steel body, the emotions are caught within the limitations of the length of the phrases in the melody in the song. However, that suppression and suffocation of the feelings come out beautifully through Rahman’s voice. Making an impacting song, by stacking up such short phrases of melody one after the other for 5 minutes, with restrictive techno beats and sounds and without it ever sounding monotonous, is tough task, but, Rahman succeeded in doing just that in this song. Karki’s humanoid verses contribute equally well. If only, he had mixed the voices a little louder.

The opening of ‘Arima’, with trumpets, thundering snares and roaring chorus, would be ideal for a Rajini introduction scene. With strings stirring and rock guitars strumming throughout, the grandeur quotient never drops down. Though none of the instruments used in ‘Arima’ is used in ‘Kilimanjaro’, I would say, it sounds grand in its own way. Instantly captivating melody, tribal rhythms realized with fresh sounding percussions, musically rhyming verses of Pa.Vijay and interesting instrumentation make the song an easy winner. And those classical Tabla rhythms amidst tribal drumming – “Aaha! Aaha!”.

‘Boom Boom Robo Da’ is a fun song that sings praises of Chitti Robot. Though, this song, again, is bedded with all techno beats, it is much milder in sound than it is in the other songs and holds the sweet innocent melody gently throughout. The song is exotically packaged with multiple layers of sounds, beats and instruments. Song keeps throwing distinct music parts – rap by Yogi B, Mandolin flourishes in the prelude, Spanish guitars in the interlude, and keeps up totally engaged throughout.

It seems ‘Chitti Dance Showcase’ is a background score to Chitti’s moves of varied dance styles. Classical Jathis chopped and grated in synth saw is the major theme of this song. This Jathi-chopping is an experiment that Rahman has been doing since ‘Parthaalae Paravasam', but it finally finds complete justification here. How else can we score for a scene in which a Machine is performing a classical dance? Keeping experiments aside, that breezy string section sounds so ethereal, when it suddenly makes an entry amidst hard techno sounds. Especially when the rushing strings take a mellifluous flight with wood winds and angelic choir, I had Goose bumps.

I like Endhiran Music.

Endhiran shoot rumour!

Last Thursday, Shankar completed the entire shoot of his magnum opus Endhiran, with the shoot of the last song in a studio setup picturised on Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai and choreographed by Remo.

The leading director wrote in his blog, “It was a very, very happy moment for everyone. I think this is the first film where I am doing the pumpkin-breaking pooja (poosanika udaikiradhu) with the lead stars (Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai) present on the occasion.” Later, media baron and producer Kalanithi Maran celebrated the occasion by throwing a big party for the entire unit.

The very next day, further good news awaited the director as composer A R Rahman handed him the master music copy of the film. A delighted Shankar wrote, “Rahman gave the Tamil songs final mix master to us. It is amazing, rocking and sounding as big and grand as the budget of the movie. The first song clearly indicates that our A R Rahman is an Oscar winner. I hope that our combination lives up to expectations once again.” Shankar has also made it clear that the audio of the film will be released by the end of this month.

Meanwhile, there is a fierce bidding war going on between a Mumbai-based audio major and a Chennai-based company for the audio rights of the film. The grapevine has it that the audio of Endhiran has been snapped up for a record price, somewhere in the Rs 7 to Rs 8 crore range. This is the highest ever paid for an audio in south Indian film history, a price almost on par with recent Bollywood music acquisitions.

A music industry tracker said, “The price that the market is talking about is a new benchmark in south Indian films’ audio market. The music of Sivaji, the previous Rajinikanth-Shankar-Rahman combo film, was marketed by the producers themselves and so, we do not have an exact rate for it. Raavanan was purchased for around Rs 2 crore. It’s phenomenal that the rights of Endhiran went for more than three times that price.”
